Baseball & Yoga Socks

Baseball weather is here!

Oceanside Organic Yoga Sock

Oceanside Organic Yoga Sock

May 5, 2009.

Spring has hit hard here in NE PA. This past week has given us several days in the 80’s. Each year, once the spring weather arrives, my thoughts turn to one of my favorite things- Baseball!

My family is fortunate enough to have season tickets for our local Triple A team: Phillie’s affiliate: The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs!

Baseball games are a perfect time to pull out the knitting, and socks lend themselves to these times very well. They are small enough to carry into the ballpark, and if you keep the pattern simple, you will still be able to keep an eye out for those foul balls that often scream into the stands.

I’d like to start my blogging with a free pattern for socks knitted out of a new quality from our Plymouth Earth collection of organic yarns: Oceanside Organic Cotton. At DK weight, this certified organic cotton knits up quickly into this pair of yoga socks! It is a soft multi plied cotton with a slight sheen in the natural colors of grown fiber.

Yoga socks are strange looking beasts with a mission: Keep the toes & heel exposed for traction on the yoga mat, while keeping the ankles warm! If you have never knitted socks before, these are a great way to get hooked- no heel to turn, and no toe to graft. Remember- simple knitting for the ballgame.

Hope you enjoy this pattern and try it the next time you are out at the Ballpark. Enjoy the sun!

Note:

These socks do not have heels or toes. They enable your toes and heel to grasp the yoga mat without slipping, while keeping your feet cozy warm.

Instructions:

Cuff:
Loosely cast on 48 sts. *(K4, p2); repeat from * around for the first round of sts, dividing onto 3 needles,
12-12-24. Join sts in a circle, taking care not to twist, and continue in the (k4, p2) pattern for 1”.

Begin Twisted Rib Stitch:

Row 1: *(K4, p2); repeat from * around.

Row 2: *(RT twice, p2); repeat from * around.

Row 3: *(K4, p2); repeat from * around.

Repeat Rows 1 – 4 until sock measures 4”.

Continue working in pattern on needles 1 and 2.

Bind off needle 3 loosely.

Foot:

Continue working in pattern on needles 1 and 2.

Cast on 24 sts on needle 3.

Continue working in pattern on needles 1 and 2.

On needle 3, work in (k4, p2) rib.

Continue this way, until foot of sock measures 3”.

Work all needles in (k4, p2) ribbing for 1”.

Bind off, in rib, loosely.

Right Twist – RT: K2tog, leaving stitches on LH needle, insert RH needle from front between 2 stitches knitted together and knit first stitch again, then slid both stitches from needle together.
